This month’s IN-FOCUS is the Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19), an infectious disease caused by a new virus identified in Wuhan, China at the end of 2019. The disease causes respiratory illness (much like the flu) with symptoms such as a cough, fever, and in more severe cases, difficulty breathing. You can protect yourself by washing your hands frequently, avoiding touching your face, and avoiding close contact (maintain a 6-foot distance) with people who are unwell. Wearing cloth face covers can reduce your health risk.
Coronavirus disease spreads primarily through contact with an infected person when they cough or sneeze, and it is now believed the virus may spread simply from talking and breathing. It also spreads when a person touches a surface or object that has the virus on it, then touches their eyes, nose, or mouth.
If you have a fever or cough, you might have COVID-19. Most people have mild illness and are able to recover at home. Keep track of your symptoms.
